Q1: Does the recommended age mean that the candidate is necessarily suited to that grade?
A1: No. The recommended age is for reference only. The actual grade should be determined with reference to the candidate’s observation, composition, control of media and overall standard of completion.
Examination Content and Preparation
Q2: May mixed media be used for Grades 5–8?
A2: Yes. There is no restriction on media for Grades 5–8. Candidates may choose to work with one or more paints or drawing tools.
Results and Certificates
Q3: Do all grades need to submit a portfolio?
A3: Yes. Candidates in Grades 1–3 must submit three works; candidates in Grades 4–5 must submit four works; and candidates in Grades 6–8 must submit three works, together with information about each work, process photographs and the relevant declarations.
Q4: Do Grades 1–4 need to submit a brief process account for the portfolio?
A4: No. Each work submitted for Grades 1–4 must be accompanied by its title, completion date, media used, dimensions and two to five photographs of the creative process. Only candidates in Grades 5–8 must also provide a brief account of the creative process.
General Questions
Q5: Are Grades 7–8 required to submit an art criticism essay?
A5: Yes. Candidates for Grades 7–8 must submit an art criticism essay as part of the portfolio assessment.
Q6: Are formal sample works already available for Grades 5–8?
A6: At this stage, formal sample works are not yet available. They will be published after the relevant sample works have been approved.
Q7: How can I find out which grades are actually open for registration?
A7: The grades, dates and sessions actually open for registration are subject to the latest examination notice.
Q8: When will the examination admission form be issued?
A8: The examination admission form is normally emailed by HKEAA about two weeks before the examination. If it has not been received one week before the examination, please contact UVAAC by email.
Q9: May candidates show the examination admission form on a mobile phone?
A9: No. Candidates must print the examination admission form themselves and bring it to the examination venue on the day of the examination.
Q10: May parents accompany candidates to the examination venue floor?
A10: No. Only candidates are permitted to enter the examination venue. Parents or accompanying persons may not accompany candidates to the examination floors or remain within the examination venue area.
